Atiku Vows to Deliver Ekiti to ADC in 2027, Tells Governor Oyebanji to Prepare Handover Notes

In a statement that has sparked intense political debate and energized the opposition, former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has declared his commitment to delivering Ekiti State to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Speaking during a high-level political engagement in Ado-Ekiti, Atiku boldly told the incumbent Governor, Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to start preparing his handover notes.
This declaration, coming from one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures, is not only a signal of Atiku’s growing alignment with alternative platforms but also a direct challenge to APC’s stronghold in the southwest region.
Atiku Abubakar, who has been a central figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey, said the people of Ekiti are tired of empty promises, underdevelopment, and unresponsive leadership. According to him, the ADC represents a fresh, people-driven alternative that can rescue the state from years of stagnation.
“Ekiti is ready for change. The people are awake, the youths are energized, and the ADC is the platform for progress. Governor Oyebanji should begin drafting his handover notes because the countdown to 2027 has already begun,” Atiku declared.
He emphasized that the ADC is fast gaining ground in Ekiti and across the nation due to its populist ideology and people-oriented approach to governance. Atiku praised the efforts of ADC grassroots organizers who have been mobilizing at the ward level and urged them to intensify voter education ahead of 2027.
Ekiti, often referred to as the “Fountain of Knowledge,” has a politically active and enlightened electorate. However, despite its intellectual reputation, the state has struggled with poor infrastructure, low industrial development, high youth unemployment, and weak healthcare delivery.
Atiku believes the ADC has the vision and leadership capacity to turn things around, especially if given a chance in 2027. He criticized the APC-led government for what he described as “policy failures and wasted opportunities,” claiming that Ekiti’s potential has been underutilized.
Responding to Atiku’s comments, the media aide to Governor Biodun Oyebanji described the former Vice President’s remarks as “delusional and politically provocative.” The statement maintained that APC remains the most popular and trusted party in Ekiti, citing the governor’s numerous achievements in road construction, school renovations, and youth empowerment.
“Atiku is looking for political relevance. Instead of attempting to hijack another party, he should focus on fixing the crisis in the PDP. Ekiti people know who they can trust, and it’s not ADC,” the aide said.
Despite skepticism from the ruling party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is gaining visibility in Ekiti’s political scene. Many believe Atiku’s support could bring national attention and resources to the party's campaign. Several grassroots politicians, youth leaders, and professionals are reportedly in talks with ADC coordinators, considering defecting from both the APC and PDP.
Political observers believe this could reshape the 2027 gubernatorial race in Ekiti, making it more competitive than ever. The ADC, with Atiku’s influence, may succeed in disrupting the traditional two-party dominance in the state.
With over two years to go before the next general elections, Ekiti is already becoming a battleground of ideologies, influence, and political realignment. Atiku’s vow to deliver the state to ADC has ignited early political activities and intensified the mobilization drive across local governments.
If ADC can produce a credible, widely acceptable candidate with a strong grassroots network and align with key political blocs in Ekiti, Governor Oyebanji’s second-term ambition could face a serious threat.
Atiku Abubakar's bold declaration to deliver Ekiti State to ADC in 2027 marks a critical moment in Nigeria's unfolding political narrative. It reflects the growing discontent with the status quo and a potential political revolution powered by the people’s desire for credible leadership and real development.
Whether the ADC can live up to this promise remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Ekiti’s 2027 election will be one of the most closely watched and hotly contested in Nigeria’s democratic history.
