In recent months, Nigeria’s political space has been buzzing with reports of key defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). On the surface, these moves appear like a genuine exodus of aggrieved party members seeking refuge in the opposition. But deep inside, a growing school of thought believes this is nothing more than a well-orchestrated political script—a strategic ploy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s loyalists to infiltrate, spy on, and ultimately weaken the opposition.

Nigerian politics is no stranger to defections. Politicians have, for decades, used cross-carpeting as a tool for survival, bargaining, or repositioning ahead of elections. However, analysts now argue that the latest defections of APC members to the ADC may not be as innocent as they appear.

Instead of being disgruntled politicians who lost out in APC’s power tussles, many of these so-called defectors remain Tinubu loyalists at heart. The suspicion is that they were deliberately “planted” in the ADC to:

Gather intelligence on opposition strategies.
Create internal crises and division within the ADC.
Weaken the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ensure APC maintains a firm grip on power by sabotaging credible alternatives.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, often referred to as the “Jagaban of Nigerian politics,” has built a reputation for strategic maneuvering and long-term political calculations. From Lagos to Abuja, Tinubu has shown that he plays politics like a chessboard—always three steps ahead of his opponents.

If indeed the defections to ADC are part of his strategy, it would not be surprising. Planting loyalists in rival parties is a well-known political tactic globally, and Tinubu’s camp has mastered the art of controlling both allies and enemies through infiltration.

The ADC, though not one of Nigeria’s biggest political parties, has recently been positioning itself as a viable alternative to the APC-PDP dominance. With the youth, civil society, and disenfranchised voters looking for new platforms, ADC has a chance to become a strong opposition voice.

But with APC loyalists now reportedly flooding the party’s ranks, the risks are clear:

Loss of credibility: If voters see ADC as compromised, its appeal may dwindle.
Internal sabotage: Tinubu’s loyalists could stir factional crises and disrupt the party’s cohesion.
Strategic paralysis: Opposition leaders may unknowingly reveal strategies to infiltrators who report back to APC.

If true, this infiltration scheme goes beyond party rivalry. It raises concerns about Nigeria’s democracy itself. A weakened opposition means:

Less accountability for the ruling party.
No strong alternative for the electorate.
Continued dominance of the APC, regardless of performance.

In a country where voters are yearning for change, planting spies in opposition parties undermines democratic fairness and deepens political mistrust.

For ADC to survive this suspected infiltration, it must:

Vigorously vet new members to ensure they are not Trojan horses.
Strengthen internal cohesion by building loyalty and transparency within the party.
Develop counter-strategies that make it difficult for infiltrators to derail their agenda.
Mobilize grassroots support, especially from young Nigerians hungry for genuine change.

The defections of APC members to ADC may appear like a natural political migration, but suspicions run high that they are part of a Tinubu-orchestrated infiltration plot. If unchecked, this could cripple ADC’s potential as a rising opposition force.

For Nigeria’s democracy to thrive, opposition parties must remain vigilant and truly independent. Otherwise, what appears to be a multi-party system may just be a carefully managed one-party dominance in disguise.
